Slaný town

The town was named after a local salt spring, issuing from the foot of a hill. There is written evidence about the founding of a settlement in the area under the Slany Hill. It subsequently spread and gained importance with the growth of trade.

At the turn of the 14th century, King Wenceslas II founded a town, which was promoted to the status of a Royal Town in 1305. Subsequent rulers bestowed many royal privileges on it. In 1336 the town was granted the right to use its own coat of arms.

In the Hussite period, Slany with its important location near Prague became one of the centers of the movement.

After 1620 we should mention the native of Slany, Jan Sultys od Fensdorf, who was among the 27 Czech lords beheaded on the Old Town Square in Prague, and the sale of the town into the hands of the House of Martinic of Smecno.

Since the turn of the 20th century, the town has developed as an industrial one, albeit to a degree in the shadow of the nearby cities of Kladno and Rakovnik.

Today, Slany is a regional center with ancient urban development testifying to its rich history as a Royal Town. It is also a center of social, sports and cultural life, of industry and trade.
